WITD 501.02 Two Handed Whips Floggers17 viewsThe first whips I recommend practicing with are two floggers. Ideally they are a matched set made by the same flogger maker. Realistically they should be the same length tails made by the same flogger maker. Practically they do not have to be the same leather, but can be mismatched to provide a variation in sensations. Say lamb or goat skin for one and cowhide or bison for the other just as an example. A matched set will provide a collection of ~the same number of tails and weight in each hand throwing.

WITD 501.15 Alternating Forehands17 viewsThis two handed technique focuses on the forehand. Throw the forehand with the dominant hand and leave the whip out. Alternate and throw the forehand with the off hand or non-dominant hand and leave it out. As you throw the alternate forehand recover the dominant hand on the forehand side. Alternate between throwing a forehand right handed and left handed to do this two whip pattern with only throwing forehands.

WITD 501.04 Best Singletail to Begin 2 Handed16 viewsWhat is the best singletail to use to begin to learn two handed technique? For those who are ambidextrous it might not matter, but for mere mortals I'm going to recommend two dragontails or two signal whips. Signals should be a matched set made by the same whip maker and plaited as matched sets. I recommend 3' or 4' whips to begin with. Remember we aren't learning sport cracking techniques, we are learning with a goal of contact dungeon play with a whip bottom.

WITD 501.10 Tassel Style Popper vs Ponytail Style Popper for Two Handed Whip Work16 viewsA traditional style cracker is simply a piece of twisted string or cording made from a wide variety of possible materials finished with an overhand knot leaving 1 1/2 to 2" of fluff. That fluff is what is played with however it is a small margin and only a very skilled whip thrower can play with only the fluff. When the overhand knot hits the whip catcher it will leave a small dot, streak or mark. Hence playing without marking using a traditional cracker is very hard to do. When moving to two handed whip work, there needs to be a larger margin for error, especially during the learning phase as muscle memory and finesse are being acquired. Normally I recommend using a ponytail style cracker most often I call this a ladysally style cracker. However, for beginning two handed work, I'm recommending beginning with a tassel style cracker to provide an even larger margin for error.

WITD 501.06 Safety w Two Handed Whip Work15 viewsSafety is twice as important with two handed whip work. Whips can become tangled, can deflect and go astray, can not end up where you intend because of a lack of focus, skill or mileage with a certain technique or pattern. The whip bottom or catcher should in the learning phase of the whip thrower wear eye protection, recommend a neck pillow or rolled up towel around the neck and consider wearing a leather vest in the early stages of the whip thrower getting comfortable with two handed work. The whip thrower should wear a wide brim hat, long sleeves, long pants, and consider safety glasses. Practice practice practice, but be safe first. Until both whips go where you intend them without you having to even think, then over think safety for both the whip thrower and catcher.

WITD 501.07 Pros and Cons of Two Handed Throwing13 viewsAs with anything there are trade offs. There are many pros to two handed throwing. Higher repetition rate produces a better more consistent rhythm. Focusing on one target area two handed. Single hand whip throwing is easier to syncopate and play with stall speed matching the energy of the music. Single handed technique allows alternating target zones between both shoulders and butt so essentially there are 4 targets. This allows working the heart and root chakras. While this is possible with two handed work, I do not know anyone who throws two handed who does anything beyond focusing on a single target area. Targeting genital areas is much easier with static single handed techniques and almost impossible to do two handed. So there is a place for two handed throwing, but also an equally important place for single handed throwing and trade offs for both approaches.

Some of the same techniques apply to handled floggers. Off the shoulder, forward figure 8 can all be done with finger floggers. 4 count and 6 count Florentine are demonstrated.

Off hand catch-up is a purposeful approach at educating your off hand into doing all of the daily habits, tasks and chores your dominant hand already has had a lifetime of practice doing. So even when you practice whips, use your off hand to practice all of the techniques and give your dominant hand a day or week off.

Two 4' Peter Jack bullwhips are compared that are not a matched set, but were independently plaited. As compared to a matched set of 4' bullwhips by Peter Jack. Some alternatives for practice are introduced but it is easy to see from the video how difficult using mismatched whips is when trying to throw for sensation play in a dungeon. Practicing with mismatched whips while waiting for a matched set is one thing. Actually playing successfully in the dungeon with a whip bottom is something much more challenging with mismatched whips.
